2007 Annual Neighborhood Survey

Survey

Residents of the Wesley Neighborhood like their location, established neighborhood, beauty, and neighbors more than other attributes.

They're concerned most about speeding, stop-sign running, rental houses, and property maintenance.

Satisfaction with our community association climbed noticeably with a record amount of dues and donations received with these survey replies. Many neighbors wrote supportive comments such as "Thanks for all you do for our neighborhood."

These results are from our seventh-annual neighborhood survey. The survey forms were distributed to all 385 households in the neighborhood with our May 2007 newsletter. Fifty-three households (14 percent) returned the surveys, which is a very good percentage for voluntary mail-in surveys.

Our annual surveys are important means for us to gauge neighborhood likes and dislikes. We are the only community association we know of that surveys its residents annually if at all.

Details of the survey follow.

Observations

Statistics can be easily misinterpreted. As examples:

School quality rates low on our surveys because families with school-age children are a minority of the community. The low rating should not be construed as a low interest in school quality. In fact, schools receive higher numbers and percentages of total responses each year as the number of families with children increases in our neighborhood.

The same applies to public transportation access. Only a few people in the neighborhood use public transportation. Those who use it checked the box on the survey, and those who don't use it did not check the box. The low rating should not be construed as a dissatisfaction with public transportation

Fire protection might rate higher than police protection because a fire station is nearby. It should not be construed as meaning that people are dissatisfied with police protection. No negative comments were written about police protection, and no positive comments were written about fire protection.

Maybe the police can explain how barking dogs differ from loud music/noises coming from someone's house? Something has to be done - the system is a complete waste of time and a failure.

Traffic calming, trash and brush removal, KUB tree cutting, codes enforcement, TDOT projects update

Barking dogs and roaming ones

Extending greenway so it connects to WH [West Hills] Elementary School and Sutherland Greenway

Codes re homeowner responsibilities for maintaining property and rights of neighbors re trees shrubs over property lines

I'd like to hear a traffic cop address speeding on Wesley. Just station a car on Wesley and Kinzalow to catch them.

Noise control at area apartment communities encouraging them to put up privacy fences.

Keeping the neighborhood in quality shape.

Everything

We love living here!

Thanks for the newsletter!

Cooperation with other neighborhoods in the area re: common concerns, strength in numbers.

Thanks for a wonderful job and "care taking" of our homes and neighborhood. Couldn't do without you!

You good "young people" are doing a good job!

Just keep on keeping on. We appreciate you and all you do.

In the "Issues" Section

A lot of spray painting and bashed mailboxes

More sidewalks. Reduction in overhead wires and poles. Street litter continues including unauthorized signs posted.

Pet owners that "walk" their [pets] through the neighborhood and allow their pets to "poop" in yards other than their own! Grrrrr. At least pick up the "poop" after a deposit has been made!

Parking on the street and leaving cars overnight.

Sidewalks.

Wesley [neighborhood] to always be residential only.

Are car burglaries and house breaks becoming a problem?

Parked vehicles blocking driveway lanes. Children (underage) driving recreational vehicles up and down on Haverhill and Dorchester.

I will be grateful when the lot on the corner of Wesley and Dorchester is cleaned up.

More sidewalks. We live so close to our schools. We need to make it safe to walk to school.

Multiple cars and vans in driveways. Too many families living in house on corner . . .

Clutter on properties and garages. Also starting a program to let neighbors know about elderly neighbors so we can help them in and around their homes.

Empty house on Sheffield backyard lawn is at least 2 feet deep.

In regard to construction area at Wesley and Dorchester, do you know when the area will be completed? [This question was answered personally and in our July newsletter.]
